The upper South state of Tennessee initially resisted seceding from the United States in the months between the election of Abraham Lincoln (November 1860) and the beginning of the Civil War at the Battle of Fort Sumter (April 1861). Despite a seeming unionist majority in early 1861, the state steadily drifted into the Confederate sphere over the next few months, and by the summer of 1861, had joined ten other Southern states in seceding from the United States.
