Sociologist Sudhir Venkatesh talks about his book Gang Leader for a Day: A Rogue Sociologist Takes to the Streets. While a graduate student in Chicago, Sudhir Venkatesh spent seven years observing the daily life of the urban poor and the inner workings of a local gang. In the book he chronicles his experience getting to know the residents of a public housing project, interacting with gang members, and befriending the gang's leader.
