Spirituality is a form of coping for clients and their families.

Imagine that you are a new school social worker in a local urban school district. The assistant principal has sent you a referral and requested that you speak with a new teenage female student. In reviewing the referral from the assistant principal, you learn that student is a ninth grader who is from a small town. The student, May, is originally from Bandung, Indonesia. As you continue to read the referral, you uncover the fact that the student has participated in prayer several times a day. Many other students have used this participation in faith-based practices as an excuse for not completing assignments in their courses. The teachers have reported the student's prayer time to be disruptive.

Describe how you will address the issues presented in the referral, promote the well-being of the student, and follow up with the assistant principal. Consider the NASW Code of Ethics and NASW Standards for Cultural Competence as you think about your engagement with the client.
