1. Discuss the advantages to genetically modifying plants compared to traditional crossbreeding techniques. Now, discuss any disadvantages.

2. Genetic engineering has resulted in many commercially ready crops. Research and identify one genetically modified food product you have eaten.

3. Were you aware that this food had been genetically modified?

4. Will you eat this food again? Why or why not?

5. Think about a food product that you would like to modify. Describe the new product explaining the new qualities you would genetically modify. How would this product be beneficial to society?

6. What types of regulations and labeling practices should accompany these foods?

7. Many eukaryotic genes have been cloned for the purpose of producing medically important proteins using similar genetic engineering techniques. For example, insulin has been isolated and inserted into bacteria for production and then used to treat persons with diabetes. Do you think this type of genetic engineering is acceptable? Why or why not?

8. How much manipulation do you think scientists should be allowed to do to organisms and who do you think should regulate these decisions?
