Assessment
Based on the findings from Assessment One, identify and develop appropriate disaster risk reduction strategies and propose measures to mitigate or reduce the identified risks tailored to your chosen community.
Prioritise interventions that target the root causes of vulnerability and enhance community resilience to disasters and that include appropriate stakeholders in the chosen community.
Your report should be 3000 words (10% deviation accepted) and address, at a minimum, the following points:
Propose specific disaster risk reduction strategies aligned with the Sendai Framework principles.
Discuss how these strategies can be implemented at the community level.
Address the unique challenges and opportunities associated with the community's geographical, socioeconomic, and cultural context.
Identify relevant stakeholders, including professional agencies, businesses, and community groups that contribute to disaster resilience.
Describe how you would engage these stakeholders in your strategies and the risk reduction process.
At a minimum these are some points you can cover. Please use these guidance notes in conjunction with your Assessment Two marking rubric.
Introduction:
Overview of your chosen community (from Assessment one) and its context in terms of disaster risks and vulnerabilities that you identified.
Summary of Disaster Resilience Strategies:
Begin by providing a summary of the disaster resilience strategies you will propose for the designated community.
Explain how these strategies aim to mitigate or reduce the identified risks and prioritise interventions targeting the root causes of vulnerability.
Emphasise the goal of enhancing community resilience to disasters.
Risk Reduction Strategies and the Sendai Framework:
Identify specific risk reduction strategies based on the findings from Assessment One and align them with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction principles.
Discuss how each strategy contributes to the goals and targets outlined in the Sendai Framework.
Provide a rationale for selecting these strategies and explain how they address the identified risks and vulnerabilities.
Provides a comprehensive and detailed discussion on how the proposed strategies can be effectively implemented at the community level. Considers various aspects such as resources, capacity building, and community participation.
Analysis of Existing and Potential Partnerships/Stakeholders:
Analyse the existing partnerships and stakeholders involved in disaster management plans and governance in the designated community.
Evaluate their current contributions to enhancing disaster resilience.
Identify potential private and/or public sector partnerships and stakeholders that could contribute to resilience-building efforts.
Assess each stakeholder's roles, responsibilities, and strengths, and discuss how they can be effectively engaged in enhancing disaster resilience.
Elements of Resilience:
Identify and analyse the physical, social, economic, and/or environmental elements of resilience that are applicable to the selected community.
Addresses the challenges and opportunities associated with the community's geographical, socioeconomic, and cultural context.
Discuss how these elements contribute to overall resilience and provide examples or case studies relevant to the community.
Explain how the proposed strategies address these elements and strengthen resilience from multiple perspectives.
Examples of relevant stakeholders include - but are not limited to - the following:
Local government
State/provincial government
National/federal government
Local business interests/corporate actors
National business interests/corporate actors
Community organisations (e.g. social clubs or fraternities, cultural societies, religious organisations)
International agencies (e.g. United Nations, World Bank, WHO).
