Assignment:

1. The NCAA is an "amateur" sport organization and it has gone to great lengths to enforce amateurism on student-athletes. However, in the last 10 years student-athletes have legally challenged many of the long-standing NCAA policies and rules related to amateurism. These legal challenges have led to significant changes in college sport and student-athlete power.

Discuss three (3) significant ways in which current and/or former student-athletes have challenged the NCAA's policies and rules and the results of these legal challenges.

2. Recently, the University of Oklahoma and the University of Texas announced their plans to leave the Big 12 conference (Power 5) and join the Southeastern Conference (another Power 5). Almost immediately, the Big 12 conference announced that it was adding four new schools  once Oklahoma and Texas departed. These four new additions to the Big 12 will come from the Mountain West Conference and the American Athletic Conference (both Group of 5). Conference realignments like these have drastically altered the college sport landscape over the past 10-12 years and will likely continue for the foreseeable future. Why are schools so willing and eager to change conference membership? Discuss three (3) significant reasons that are influencing these conference membership changes.

3. Friends of yours claim that professional sport leagues in the U.S. are much more powerful than any other sport organizations in the world. You suggest that the International Olympic Committee's power may be even stronger, especially in terms of global influence. They laugh at your assertion, and state that there is no way this amateur sport structure can match the U.S. professional sport leagues' power. Provide three (3) arguments to support the claim that the IOC is one of the most, if not the most, powerful sport organization in the world.

4. The Olympic Games represent a unique form of international sport that includes a wide variety of sporting events and participants from over 200 countries. Traditionally, the IOC has awarded the Games to a different city each Olympiad, and historically multiple cities have submitted bids for consideration. However, the number of cities interested in hosting the Olympic Games has rapidly decreased in the last decade. Only one or two cities have submitted final bids for five of the most recent Olympic host city selections. Discuss three (3) significant reasons why many cities around the world are choosing not to pursue hosting the Olympic Games.
