Choose and respond to ONLY ONE of the essay choices below:

1. First, give a couple of cultural interpretations of "tagging the city" from a cultural perspective. Then write a summary of Rafael Schacter's essay "Graffiti & Street Art as ornament" in which you examine how he understands graffiti as "ornament" to the city.

2. First, give a brief explanation of one traditional, formal difference between graffiti writing and a mural. Then choosing a specific example or examples, -- such as, Willie Herrón's Wall that cracked open (1972, East City Terrace, Los Angeles, CA), the Chicago Mural, Wall of Respect (1967), or the Ramona Gardens and Estrada Courts, LA circa 1972), -- write an essay in which you:

• Describe the type of images seen in the chosen mural(s);
• Explain how the physical location of the work, both in terms of the wall, as well as the building/ street, and neighborhood, are significant for the interpretation of the works.
• Then discuss the "dialogue" that existed between community murals and graffiti (if you use terms such as gang graffiti or barrio calligraphy, these must be explained.)
