Question

RPI is your Client, and they have decided to replace North Lot with a scenic pond. The idea is to excavate a 10-ft deep pond (side slopes?) at the North Lot parking site and construct a spillway to Sage Ave. The Client envisions the spillway as a 5-ft long broad crested weir with one foot of freeboard between the spillway crest at EL 220 and the top of dam elevation at EL 221, but they are open to your suggestions. You are the Senior Engineer on this project and have been the Client's primary point of contact for your engineering firm. Your current scope is to work with the Client to develop a conceptual design. You and the Client are in the brainstorm phase! Ultimately there will be a need to develop a detailed Schematic Design Report, but that will involve more detailed Hydrology and Hydraulic assessments, and input from other disciplines such as structural and geotechnical. Your immediate need, and the goal of this assignment, is to gain a working understanding of HEC-HMS, the proposed project, and prepare for an upcoming workshop with the Client to discuss conceptual alternatives for the spillway from the Hydrology and Hydraulics.
