Question

The physical assessment differs from a child vs an adult by a number of things. For an adult you can get a lot from their history by asking them. With a child you are not able to get a history from them, you are more likely going to be getting it from their caregiver. An adult can tell you if they are in pain, a child you will probably use the FLACC scale or FACES scale. For an adult you will do your typical head to toe assessment, neuro/cognitive, cardiac, respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and skin. For the child patient you will do all of that, except your neuro/cognitive assessment will be different depending on the age. An infant would just be looking for alertness. You will also measure the head circumference of children, which in normal healthy adults you do not do.
