How did different societies managed conflicts within their societies, such as conflicts along socioeconomic (class) lines, conflicts between men and women, different ethnic and religious groups, etc.? To what extent did ruling elites resort to violence, and why? In what circumstances did they tend to avoid or limit violence, and why? Consider some other relevant factors in examining these issues. (Examples: Classical Greece, Classical Rome, the ancient Islamic world, China, Korea, Japan, India, various areas of Sub-Saharan Africa, the Americas, or the Pacific Islands.)
