Question

Some of your classmates argued that a smaller eIPSC amplitude may have arisen from a reduced GABA-A receptor density in the postsynaptic membrane. To address this concern, you decided to measure the miniature IPSC (mIPSC) frequency and amplitude

1. What are the major differences between eIPSC and mIPSC in terms of their amplitudes and how they are produced.

2. To increase the basal mIPSC frequency to at least 3 times per second, you also manipulated extracellular K+ and Ca2+ levels. Compared to normal extracellular solution, would you increase or decrease these ion concentrations? Please explain your reasoning.
