Trevor Noah's standup comedy skit delves into numerous themes relating to concepts discussed in your textbook and presented in supplemental videos. It includes discussions concerning language, culture, race, ethnicity, education, economics, family, popular media, gender, sexuality, multiculturalism, and more.
After watching both films and reflecting on the course material presented:
1) Discuss from a sociological perspective the difference between race and ethnicity, along with the terms prejudice, racism and scapegoat. Explain how your racial or ethnic identity has played a significant (positive or negative) role in your life?
2) Racial and ethnic stereotypes are everywhere in the mass media (social media, television ads, magazines etc). Surveying some of these mediums, identify racial or ethnic stereotypes in the media. Who were the targets? Which sociological or psychological theories best explain the dissemination of these racial or ethnic representations in the mass media?
3) Discuss the key concepts you recognized from the course and how Trevor Noah presented them. Are his jokes funny because they truly represent reality? Or do you find him to be way off base in his representation? Include personal experiences.
4) Where relevant, relate the films to concepts discussed. You should identify a minimum of 15 course concepts.
5) Finally, personally reflect on your relationship with the standup. Did anything stand out to you in particular?
