Assignment:
The link to the film that I want you to watch is BELOW these questions. You will also need to watch the additional videos on Race and Ethnicity that I provided in this Week's Module Folder.
Race and Ethnicity in the United States
In the sense that different groups inherit distinctive physical traits, race is a reality in the United States. As reviewed in your text, there is no agreement regarding what constitutes a particular race or even how many races there are.
(1) Explain the difference between RACE and ETHNICITY (the Sociological definitions from the text) to at least two of your family members or friends. Then ask how many races that they believe there are in the American society. Write down their responses. Do YOU agree or disagree with your FAMILY'S perspective? Explain why for either position.
(2) Based on the way Sociologists view race, it is SOCIALLY CONSTRUCTED. This means that the RACE you are can change depending on where you are in the world. This is because different countries have differing definitions of what constitutes a white person, a black person, a mixed race person, and so on.
Does that mean that a person who is half black and half white would be viewed differently in the US as opposed to Brazil? Our countries have very different histories of colonization. Do some research into this idea of social construction of race.
(3) Lastly tell me your impressions of the Loving vs. Virginia film. I do not want a film critique! I want to know what you personally think about the issue of interracial marriage back then. What things stuck out to you in the film? Do you feel racism is less, more, about the same in our society today? What can we do to make things better for everyone?
