Griesi, a physical therapist, applied for a job at Atlantic General (AG). AG’s acting CEO, Slater, told Griesi he wanted to train and mentor him, and he took him on a tour of the hospital. Two weeks later, Griesi called Slater, who told him he expected to make a job offer soon. Griesi then received a job offer from another company and called Slater about the expected offer. After some discussion over several days, Slater did offer the job. He said it had been approved by the chairman of the board. Griesi accepted and turned down other job offers. Five days later Griesi received a written contract, signed by Slater, on AG’s letterhead. AG then got a new CEO, and questions arose about Griesi’s employment, but Slater assured him he was still hired. AG subsequently told him it was not hiring him and that Slater did not have the authority to do so. Did Griesi justifiably rely on Slater’s representations? Explain why.
