This assignment seeks to add value (economic, social, cultural and ecological) to the public spaces of Canal Street. Articulate a vision for Canal Street and create a great urban place or series of places to transform.

What: Canal Street 2020 re-imagine, choose your Caribbean city main street as an international tourist center that will add value to choose your Caribbean city’s main street by enhancing the surrounding area and providing economic benefits and quality of life improvements for the city.

Why: To stimulate ideas about how you can add social, cultural, ecological and economic value through investment in public space

How:

1. Articulate a vision and identity for Canal Street

2. Propose an urban innovation that unlocks value along Canal Street and transforms it into a great urban place

Site: the Caribbean City country of your choice. The city/country’s vision is for this linear street (Canal Street) to be transformed into a pedestrian focused, pedestrian friendly corridor and tourist centric. Your innovation must be impactful and one that will unify this presently disjointed street, establishing legibility while activating the street with multiple experiences that deliver social, economic, ecological and economic benefit.

Context:

Caribbean city is undergoing unprecedented development and growth as the city shifts from a suburban city to an increasingly urban city. Canal Street is to be transformed from an overcrowded transportation corridor into a pedestrian friendly, car free spine connecting the Harbour to the City.

Objectives

Your innovation should include the following based on objectives outlined below.

1. Social Benefit:

a. What is the social benefit created by your innovation and how does your proposal provide this benefit?

b. How does your proposal reinforce or, alter the social makeup of Canal Street and affect/effect interactions between people?

c. How does your proposal improve social integration along Canal Street to facilitate shared ownership of the public realm?

2. Cultural Benefit:

a. What is the cultural benefit created by your innovation and how does your proposal provide this benefit?

b. How does your proposal address the civic aspirations of the city?

c. How does your proposal respond to the variety of cultures that form Sydney's identity? - How does your proposal improve the cultural experience of Canal Street to facilitate shared owner ship of the public realm?

3. Ecological Benefit:

a. What is the ecological benefit created by your innovation and how does your proposal provide this benefit?

b. How does your proposal reinforce, alter or re-instate the ecological environment of Canal Street?

c. How does your proposal improve the ecological experience of Canal Street to facilitate shared ownership of the public realm?

4. Economic Benefit:

a. What is the economic benefit created by your innovation and how does your proposal provide this benefit?
