Research based on Online patient portal Web sites offer patients access to their electronic health record. They can view their recent lab results, visit summaries, medications, make their own appointments, and sent private messages to their health care provider team.
Many patients have high interest and satisfaction as they can access their records anytime. Healthcare workers also express their positive perceptions on the use of patient record and being able to access these when needed. These positive responses made patient portals a standard feature of care; more than half of all hospitals in the United States reported that their patients can now access patient records through their portals (Lyles, Fruchterman, Youdelman, & Schillinger, 2017).
However, the recording, collecting, and sharing of patient data to the patients as well as other parties that use patient data to improve health care quality, may pose significant ethical issues.
