Problem

Nowadays, planners in Canada generally aim to improve the quality-of-place and quality-of-life in the communities they serve by proposing policies and initiatives that seek to minimize urban sprawl and to reduce automobile dependence. At the same time, planners and planning scholars often point to more sustainable cities in other parts of the world as examples of what Canadian cities could also look like one day if we made more decisions like those they have made in those places. However, many of these efforts to foster positive change are hindered by various forms of conflict, or by competing priorities, among different stakeholders. This, in turn, can lead to what are sometimes less-than-desirable planning outcomes that prevent our communities from becoming more sustainable. Get the instant assignment help. A key question that arises from all of this, then, is: Can we realistically expect to ever develop urban and suburban environments in Canada that are less sprawling, less automobile dependent, and more sustainable?
