Much caution should be exercised in considering a change like this. From an ethics standpoint this type of change can appear misleading and not present a true picture of the financial state of the entity. This would constitute an intentional manipulation of earnings. While this may not be considered an illegal action it is definitely questionable from an ethics standpoint.

Secondly, investors may be confused by the change when viewing financial statements. In addition to confusion they may lose confidence and question the integrity of the management team. The loss of confidence could cause some investors to limit involvement with the company. The limited involvement could decrease investments and eventually have a negative impact on the bottom line.

If the entity decided to move forward with this action they should be transparent with all involved. There are alternatives that should be considered before making a potentially manipulative move like this one. The leadership team should begin looking at cost-cutting measures, review policies and procedures to find waste that could be eliminated and develop a long term strategy to make the business more profitable.
