Assignment:
On the federal level, the DEA has implemented initiatives that target drug trafficking organizations. Collaboration with the DEA aims to extend investigations that are beyond local jurisdictions, which allows for leveraging of federal resources to address broader dug networks (DEA, n.d.).
The local and state enforcement agencies primarily focus on the instant impact of drug related activities within their respective communities. The DEA State and Local Task Force Program is an initiative that combines federal knowledge and expertise with investigation skills along with the knowledge of the local and state officers. While working together, these teams can develop extremely successful drug investigations that benefit from both the local knowledge and federal resources (2020).
An example of collaboration is Operation Overdrive, which was led by the DEA. This operation has targeted drug overdose and gun violence hotspots, and extended its from Muskegon to Manistee, Michigan. Muskegon was identified as a drug trafficking hub which affected its surrounding areas. The DEA collaborated with the state, local, and federal officers to disassemble drug cells that were supplying illicit substances to nearby communities. This approach strives to reduce overdoes rates while enhancing community safety (Breen, 2024).
