To be an effective social worker, you will need to demonstrate a dedication to respecting clients by communicating effectively in spoken and written word. You will also need to develop culturally competent communication skills so you can respond sensitively and respectfully to clients with diverse perspectives, experiences, and identities.

In this assessment, you will demonstrate how to apply techniques for culturally competent communication when working with a client.

Review the scenarios in Weeks 1 and 4 about your imaginary client, Abby, and the script you created for the Week 2 summative assessment.

Consider how you can incorporate culturally competent responses in your discussions.

Assessment Deliverable

Write a 350 to 525 word script in which you apply culturally competent communication skills in a session with Abby.

Note: Revise the script you created in Week 2 by incorporating application of culturally competent communication skills. You do not need to write a new script for the assessment.

Write your script and be sure to incorporate the following details:

Abby's Perspective

Incorporate a minimum of 2 details that illustrate cultural factors (i.e., behaviors, perspectives, or beliefs) that may be relevant to Abby or her family.
Incorporate direct statements made by Abby related to the cultural factors you added.

Application of Culturally Competent Communication Skills

Include a minimum of 2 culturally competent responses you would apply to the conversation in your role as Abby's social worker. Culturally competent responses may be related to the following:

Cultural humility and sensitivity
Cross-cultural knowledge about factors specific to cultural groups or identities
Services and resources relevant to various cultural groups or identities
Empowerment and advocacy
Include at least 1 detail or response to reflect the connection between social work ethics and culturally competent communication skills.
