You have been volunteering at a local food bank when a woman comes in with three children. The woman appears exhausted and all of the children present as unkempt. The two youngest children are screaming loudly and the oldest hides behind his mother keeping his head low. He appears to have a bruise on the side of his face and his lip is bleeding. You observe that the youngest child also has a large bruise on her leg and her sister has multiple scratches to her cheeks and across her right eye. The mother also has fading bruises around her neck.
The woman asks you to assist her in filling out a form as she is unable to read or write in English. Using a translation app on your phone the woman explains that the family are originally from Slovakia and her husband moved to the UK seven years ago as an economic migrant. She joined him 4 years later with their son Stefan and his mother Julia (who has dementia). The younger children were born in the UK.
The family lives in a rented bedsit but Daniella is concerned that recently her husband has started smoking cocaine and drug dealers have approached the house demanding money. Daniella reports that when she challenged her husband about this he has become abusive towards her and the children. He has also been taking the carers allowance Daniella receives to support his mother Julia. Daniella is worried that if they do not pay the drug dealers, they have made threats to kill the family and the landlord has also stated that he will evict them if they do not pay their rent. Daniella refuses to report this to the police. She is terrified of approaching any authorities as she has been told that Social Workers will remove her children from her.
