What do I need to do?
Question 1: Form groups
You need to work in groups of 3 to complete this assessment task. You will form your group in your class. Students who are not in attendance will be allocated a group. This PPT might support you to work in your group - some helpful tips.
Important note: If you fail to complete this task in a group, your maximum mark will be out of 25 rather than 35.
Question 2: Complete your group charter
Once you have formed your group, you need to complete your Team charter. This Word document is a 'contract' that you use to help you function as a team! You will submit your team charter in week 9 by 8pm.
Question 3: Choose an Australian Indigenous population group and a settings-based health promotion initiative that exists for that group
This assignment asks you to develop a group presentation that profiles the health of an Australian Indigenous population group. That population group can be as broad or narrow as you like. For example, your chosen population could be based on gender, age, location (e.g. urban vs. rural), or sexual or gender identification (e.g. gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender). Just make sure:
You can find enough credible evidence to present and substantiate the health profile of your chosen population group, and
You can find an example of a settings-based health promotion initiative that is targeted at your population group.
Choose a group and setting that is of interest to you and your team. One strategy might be to search first for an interesting health promotion initiative that's designed for and delivered in a particular setting (e.g. school, hospital, region, city), then identify the population it targets. Alternatively, you may be really interested in the health issues facing your chosen Indigenous population group, so your team will go and search for a settings-based health promotion initiative that targets that group. You might need to use a combination of these strategies as you decide as a team on your presentation focus! You may wish to discuss your chosen population group and settings-based initiative with your lecturer.
Question 4: Research
Your presentation should cover the following issues: (This is in accordance to the marking rubric)
What is the current health status of the Indigenous population group you have chosen and what are the specific health statistics relating to the chosen Indigenous population group? (5/35 marks, about 2 minutes of your presentation)
TIP: 'Current health status' refers here to measures of life expectancy, mortality and ONE other measure relevant to your selected population group.
TIP: Include a slide that lists the health status of your Indigenous population group according to available statistics.
TIP: these resources may be helpful for this section:
Latest information and statistics - Health Facts - Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet
Mortality - Latest information and statistics - Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet
Health and wellbeing of First Nations people - Australian Institute of Health and Welfare
Please note that statistics and figures should not be copied and pasted, these need to be adapted and referenced appropriately.
According to the statistics, does this Indigenous group experience differences in health outcomes compared with non-Indigenous Australian population, and which determinants of health may be contributing to these differences? (5/ 35 marks, about 2 minutes of your presentation)
TIP: This section should use the determinants of health (social, environmental, biological) to explain why your Indigenous population group may have differences in health outcomes compared with non-Indigenous Australian population. There may be multiple determinants that explain this, it may be useful to list the range of determinants on one slide, then focus on two in more detail.
TIP: Use current and relevant literature to support this discussion, including Commonwealth Closing the Gap 2023 Annual Report and 2024 Implementation Plan. Commonwealth Closing the Gap 2023 Annual Report and 2024 Implementation Plan | NIAA
Identify and discuss a settings-based health promotion initiative used in relation to supporting your chosen Indigenous populations health experience. Also find a comparison Indigenous program internationally that links to your setting (10/35 marks, about 6 minutes of your presentation).
TIP: Remember you have a broad range of settings to choose from here - for example: workplaces, prisons, hospitals, schools, cities - refer to the Setting's week and the WHO website for a range of potential settings which you could choose from when searching for a settings-based health promotion initiative. Be sure to define your chosen setting and why it is a useful setting for health promotion. Please refer to content from Settings-based health.
TIP: Your international program should relate to your chosen setting, for example, if you chose school as your intervention setting, then find a program targeting an international Indigenous group within a school setting. New Zealand and the Pacific Islands are close neighbours with some great Indigenous settings-based health interventions that you might like to use.
Reminder: 10/35 marks for this assessment task (10% of your overall unit mark) relate to teamwork and group participation, illustrated by your group charter, and 5/35 marks relate to your presentation quality and referencing. Please refer to the AT3 rubric.
