Kennerley and colleagues (2016) define three typical maintenance cycles: the association between one's negative biases and their understanding of their symptoms, which leads to inactivity and depressed mood, which impedes one's coping ability. These wishes circle then produces one to lose hope and sustain the physical and mental state of depression.

Thus, negative biases seem to operate in the absence of positive biases (LeMoult & Gotlib, 2019) Kennerley et al. (2016) describe the specific maintenance cycle established by Moorey for depression comprising six components: "automatic negative thinking, rumination/self- attack, withdrawal/avoidance, unhelpful behaviours, mood, emotion, and motivation/physical symptoms eloquently called the growing a vicious flower" (p. 282). Although only some clients will encounter most or each petal, the therapist must have the competency of all pieces. CBT's approach to depression centers around having the client pinpoint, understand and diverge from destructive thoughts.

Furthermore, clients are encouraged to be active recipients in their treatment plan, see themselves and their future endeavors through an optimistic eye, and reinstate and increase pleasurable activities to break their current negative cycles sustained by distorted cognitions.
