The vision statement reflects a desired future state worthy of pursuing, while the mission statement is what is done almost daily in order to eventually realize the vision.

Companies develop mission and vision statements in order to develop a clear direction and organizational strategy for the success of the company. It provides an outline of performance standards necessary based on goals they want to achieve, through promoting efficiency and productivity. Within this paper an analysis on Nordstrom, a servant leadership-based company will be compared to Sears company's mission and vision statements and an analysis will be given on how these statements guide leadership practices within organizations.
