M2. Discuss health & safety legislation and codes of practice related to civil engineering sites.
M3. Illustrate how environmental, geotechnical, quality and economic contexts of a problem are addressed through a proposal..
M4. Analyse methods and techniques used to create bridge foundations, flexible highway construction foundation criteria and related geotechnical.
D1. Evaluate methods and techniques used to deal with issues of ground and slope stability.
D2. Justify a site safety plan, risk assessment and method statements report for activity related to given civil engineering project.
D3. Justify the selection of specific features in the development of a civil engineering solution to a given problem.
Assignment Brief and Guidance:
Scenario: A large development is proposed at Lok Wo Shan, Shatin, Hong Kong. The whole project covers an area of 1,024,396 square feet will be November 2014 completed. The site could contain 25 towers. A large site formation works consist of excavation, backfilling, slope-stabilization works , construction of new retaining walls, and laying of drains and other underground utilities are necessary in this project. Figure 1 and Figure 2 show the site formation plan, and final borehole log for this site formation.
You are an engineering assistant of a large contractor. You are asked to produce a report on civil engineering projects to use as marketing material for your company as it seeks to expand its business and for further diversify into infrastructure projects. You may use tables, images, photos and drawings as appropriate
Learning Outcomes :
LO1: Explain the common method and techniques used in civil engineering earthworks and substructures
1. Discuss earthworks activities, equipment and techniques. Discussion might include the excavation and earthmoving equipment may be classified into four categories: 1) excavation; 2) excavation and load; 3) haul and deposit; and 4) excavation, load, haul and deposit) with illustration or diagram. (P1)
2. Describe methods and techniques used to create complex foundations, piling works and drainage works. Discuss and explain techniques to install piling system and ground stabilization activities. First classify different types of piles and then state the details of pile installation techniques. (P2)
3. Describe methods and techniques used in culvert construction, underpass construction and provision for utilities. Illustrations construction methods used in drainage works, culvert and utilities. Drains and underground utilities can be laid by conventional open-trench excavation or trenchless method. (P3)
Analysis methods and techniques used in large complex earthmoving operations and deep excavations. Discussion might include the further methods and techniques for deep excavation (deep more than 3m from ground level). (M1)
Evaluate methods and techniques used to deal with issues of ground and slope stability. You might provide at least one example or case study with illustration for ground and slope stability for civil engineering project in Hong Kong. (D1)
LO2: Present a site safety plan, risk assessment and method statement for a given civil engineering activity.
4. Identify the hazards, risks and safety arrangements for excavations, working in confined spaces, working on structures and for working within temporary works on highways. Identify appropriate techniques and method to ensure safe and productive activities in deep excavation. Note that trench excavation involves multiple safety issues: excavation safety, working at height, confined space, etc. (P4)
5. Develop and present a site safety plan, rick assessments and method statements for a given engineering activity. Produce safety plans for problems arising from civil engineering activities. The safety plan should include, roles and responsibilities of various personnel, safety procedure, emergency procedure, etc. (P5)
Discuss health & safety legislation and codes of practice related to civil engineering sites. Discussion might in current legislation, registration, or codes of practices related to civil engineering sites in Hong Kong. Proper reference might be provided. (M2)
Justify a site safety plan, risk assessment and method statements report for activity related to given civil engineering project. Assess hazards from civil engineering activities. Give examples of hazards in typical construction processes. Hazards should first be identified and then being assessed. (D2)
LO3: Evaluate a given civil engineering problem and propose a solution
6. Evaluate the environmental, quality, geotechnical and economic contexts of a given civil engineering problem. Detail evaluation might include illusion or diagram to supply your answer.(P6)
7. Propose a solution to given civil engineering problem. You might provide illusion or diagram for supply your propose solution for solve the infrastructure projects problems in given case study in Hong Kong. (P7)
Illustrate how environmental, geotechnical, quality and economic contexts of a problem are addressed through a proposal. You might provide at least one example or case study with illustration to propose the environmental, geotechnical, quality and economic contexts of a problem for infrastructure projects in civil engineering project in Hong Kong, Proper reference might be provided. (M3)
LO4: Prepare a design proposal for a new infrastructure project
8. Describe methods and techniques used in highway design. Detail explanation might include illusion or diagram to supply your answer. (P8)
9. Develop a civil engineering design proposal for a new infrastructure project. You might provide at least one example or case study with illustration to determine of design proposal to develop new infrastructural project in Hong Kong, Proper reference might be provided.(P9)
