The structure shown below is made of structural A-36 steel. The left post is a solid round steel member with a diameter of 6 inches. The right post is a square steel member which is 6 inches square. The horizontal member is a solid steel beam with a height of 12 inches and a width of 3 inches.
A) Determine the maximum load, P, that the structure can carry.
B) Determine the maximum deflection of point A as the failure load is approached.
C) Clearly show which member is causing the failure.
A circular bar AB with ends fixed against rotation has a hole extending for half of its length (see figure). The outer diameter of the bar is d2 3.0 in. and the diameter of the hole is d1 2.4 in.
An object which has a volume of 0.18 m^3 requires a force of 265 N to keep it immersed in water. If a force of 157 N is required to keep it immersed in another liquid, find the specific gravity of the liquid
The traffic that makes a left turnat an intersection consists of two types of vehicles, Type A andB. A type A vehicle is twice the length of the type B. THe left turn lane can accommodate ten vehicles of type B, five oftype A.
A 2000-lb wheel load is to be supported by aggregate over soil with a maximum bearing pressure of 1000 lb/sqft. What depth of aggregate is needed if the angle theta is 40 degrees
One mole of an ideal monoatomic gas initially at 300 K is expanded from an initial pressure of 10 atm to a final pressure of 1 atm. The molar heat capacity for constant volume for the gas is Cv = 3/2 R .
he circular steel plate A is used to seal the opening on the water storage tank. Determine the magnitude of the resultant hydrostatic force that acts on it. Density of water = 1Mg/m^3
sitting on the deck one evening. watching for that pesky bunny, jon and his brother see a twig floating down from an aspen tree. (wait - os that a bunny) they wonder just what the boundary layer looks like on the twig.
A horizontal circular plate weighing 60-lb is suspended from three wires that are attached to a support at D and form 30 degree angles with the vertical. Determine the tension in each wire.
A pipe carrying oil of specific gravity (SG = 0.877) changes in size from 150 mm at section E to 450 mm at section R (E and R are arbitrary designations of the two points in the system).
Calcium sulfate (CaSO4, solubility product Ksp=2*10^-5 M^2), is added to initially pure water, such that solid CaSO4 remains at equilibrium. (Assume the sulfate does not participate in reaction other than the solubility product; no HSO4- formed).
Head loss and sunshine striking a pipeline cause the temperature of the water flowing inside to rise by 2 degrees Celsius between two measuring points. Find the heat gain in J/N and cal/N.
