A log that is 2 ft in diameter is to be cut into a rectangular section for use as a simply supported beam. The material is wood select structural grade (Douglas Fir) with a specific gravity of 0.017 lb/in3. If the allowable bending stress for the wood is all = 8 ksi, determine the largest load P that can be supported if the width of the beam is b = 8 in and the height h = 16 in. Draw the shear, moment diagrams and sketch the stress distribution acting over the cross section.
