If a consolidated-drained test is conducted on the clay specimen of Problem 12.17 with the same chamber-confining pressure of 150 kN/m2, what would be the deviator stress at failure?

The shear strength of a normally consolidated clay can be given by the equation tf τf = tan 27°. Following are the results of a consolidated-undrained test on the clay.

• Chamber-confining pressure 150 kN/m2

• Deviator stress at failure 120 kN/m2
