Problem Assignment - NZ Standard for Reinforced Masonry Shear Walls

The single-story shear wall shown below is constructed of fully grouted concrete masonry using Grade 500 D12 reinforcing bars spaced uniformly at 400mm.  Masonry compressive strength is 12 MPa.  The wall is to be used as a ductile wall per the NZS 4230 Standard. Construction observation is Type A.  The wall is subjected to an axial compressive force equal to 445kN (from dead and live gravity loads multiplied by load factors) as shown.

Determine the following:

1. The P-M interaction and the P-curvature diagram considering that: (a) no confinement of the compressive toe is used, and (b) that steel confining plates are placed in the mortar bed joint per the NZS standard (assume ps = 0.004).

2. Moment capacity, ?Mn, and curvature, by reading off the diagrams determined in part (1) for the axial force of 445 kN for both unconfined and confined.

3. Moment capacity and curvature using charts or tables from the NZCMA Manual. Compare with your answers from part (2) for both unconfined and confined.

4. Wall shear capacity, ?Vn if the wall is reinforced with D12 bars spaced at 400 mm, for the unconfined case.

5. The maximum allowable neutral axis depth to resist a ductility demand, µ = 4. Compare your answers for both the unconfined and confined cases.
