1.The water that flows from a faucet in any building does so with a pressure of about 50 psi. Often times, this pressure comes from the fact that community's water supply is stored in an elevated reservoir. Determine how high an elevated reservoir must be so that the water supply has a pressure of 50 psi. Given: the unit weight of water is 62.4 lb/ft3.

2. Typical water supply at a faucet in any building is conveyed in copper pipe that is ½" in inside diameter, with a wall thickness of 0.040". If the water pressure is 50 psi and the valve is closed (meaning that water is not flowing), determine the longitudinal and hoop stresses in the copper pipe.

3. For the previous given information, determine the longitudinal and hoop stresses in the copper pipe if the valve is open (meaning that water is flowing freely). Note: the pressures are, indeed, different when the water flows freely and this explains why you may sometimes hear a banging sound in your household pipes, when you open and close a faucet.
