South Africa's relatively recent legislation (the apartheid regime was abolished in 1994) provides broad protection from discrimination, listing a wide range of characteristics such as "race, gender, sex, pregnancy, marital status, ethnic or social origin, color, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, conscience, belief, culture, language, and birth" as examples of protected characteristics.
