Question: Columbus's voyages occurred in a particular intellectual context: the 15th- and 16th-century revival of humanism in Western Europe that would find expression in the Renaissance (see Voyages, Chapter 15). As we read in Chapter 21 this week, Cook's voyages occur in a different European intellectual context: the scientific revolution of the 17th and 18th centuries, and the Enlightenment, an 18th-century movement in which the rationalism of the scientific method is applied to social thought.

Think about how Cook and Banks report on their activities and interactions with the native peoples they encounter. Can you detect evidence of the changed intellectual context? Or are these Europeans essentially repeating what they've done before? Or is there a mixture of change and continuity?
