Assessment – KM Tasks Design Report
Assignment Title: Designing a Knowledge Management Solution — Bridgemont University
Objective
Evaluate and design an effective Knowledge Management (KM) solution for Bridgemont University through a practice-based case study.
Case Study: Bridgemont University
Bridgemont University is a mid-sized regional Australian university with approximately 18,000 students and 1,400 staff across four campuses. The university is experiencing significant KM challenges due to rapid growth and workforce casualisation.
KM Challenges
1. Disciplinary Silos
Seven faculties operate with significant autonomy. Cross-faculty knowledge sharing is rare and unsupported.
2. Casualised Workforce
43% of teaching staff are employed casually. Subject knowledge and course insights are lost each semester.
3. Research Knowledge Isolation
Research outputs and methodological expertise are rarely accessible to teaching staff or professional services.
4. Institutional Memory Erosion
Three Deputy Vice-Chancellors have changed in four years, and leadership transitions have left critical knowledge undocumented.
5. Student Knowledge Underutilised
Capstone and industry-engagement knowledge generated by students is rarely captured or reused institutionally.
Tasks
1. Introduction — Approx. 300 words
- Briefly introduce the concept of Knowledge Management (KM) and its significance in higher education.
- Provide an overview of Bridgemont University without revealing confidential details.
2. Evaluation of Tools and Techniques — Approx. 500 words
- Identify and evaluate at least three tools or techniques for knowledge capture, codification, and sharing.
- Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each tool/technique.
- Justify the suitability of each tool/technique for Bridgemont University.
3. Case Study Overview — Approx. 200 words
- Provide a concise overview of Bridgemont University, its sector, and KM challenges.
4. Designing the KM Solution — Five Distinct Stages — Approx. 700 words
Stage 1: Knowledge Identification and Capture
- Identify how Bridgemont will capture tacit knowledge from casual staff and departing academics.
- Propose specific elicitation activities.
Stage 2: Knowledge Codification
- Outline codification methods for academic, administrative, and student knowledge.
- Discuss taxonomy and structure.
Stage 3: Knowledge Storage and Retrieval
- Design a storage system for a multi-campus institution.
- Explore technological solutions with privacy and access considerations. This stage may also consider Management Information System concepts relevant to institutional knowledge storage and retrieval.
Stage 4: Knowledge Sharing and Collaboration
- Develop strategies for cross-faculty sharing.
- Consider communities of practice, formal and informal channels. Effective Management Communication can support the sharing of knowledge across faculties and organisational levels.
Stage 5: Knowledge Maintenance and Continuous Improvement
- Propose governance mechanisms.
- Suggest KM evaluation metrics and adaptation strategies.
5. Conclusion — Approx. 300 words
- Summarise key findings and recommendations.
- Emphasise the potential impact of the proposed KM solution on Bridgemont’s performance.
