Problem Assignment - Strength Design of Out-of-Plane RM Walls
Using the strength design requirements of the 2016 TMS 402 code, design the wall shown below for wind and gravity loadings. Compare designs for a single-wythe, partially grouted:
(1) hollow clay block wall
(2) hollow concrete block wall
The wall is subjected to a wind load of 20psf which can act as either a suction or a direct pressure. In addition, the wall must resist roof loadings equal to 200 lbs/ft dead load and 500 lbs/ft. live load that are applied via a steel ledger angle at an eccentricity of 3.0" from the face of the wall as shown in the sketch.
Assume prism strength equal to 2000 psi for the concrete masonry wall and 4000 psi for the clay brick walls, and use Grade 60 reinforcement.
The CIMS Co. is considering a new milling machine. They have narrowed the choices down to three alternatives in addition to the Null alternative. The relevant data are shown in the table below
Find the lower heating value of this fuel (Btu/lbm), the rate of fuel consumption, the heating rate needed in the carburetor, and the rate of entropy generation in the carburetor.
Within a field that is used for agricultural production, a clay unit is found at a depth 8ft below the land surface. the surface soil has a hydraulic conductivity of .6 ft/d. if parallel drains are placed 2 in per day
A bar is under uniform axial loads. AB is 1 foot and has a area of .5 in^2 and BC is 1 foot and has an area of .3 in^2. AB has a 1000lb force putting it under tension and BC has a 500lb force putting it under compression. Find stresses in AB and BC a..
The rivets are 10 mm in diameter, spaced a distance s = 24.4 mm apart, and have an average shear strength of 35 MPa. Determine the maximum internal pressure in MPa if the rivets are not to shear.
Fabco, Inc., is considering purchasing flow valves that will reduce annual operating costs by $10,000 per year for the next 12 years. Fabco's MARR is 7 percent/year. Using an internal rate of return approach
Assume that the current cost for a 120-pupil school constructed of wood frame for a city is $1,800,000. We are asked to develop an order-of-magnitude estimate for a 90-pupil school ?
Discuss the following examples: a) Car overheating b) Personal budget deficit c) Shower too hot or too cold In all the cases discuss first the normal condition and after that the problem condition.
A 30 feet column is braced at the mid-section to prevent premature failure. If the maximum load is 380 kips, select an appropriate W14 section, if any, to support the loading conditions.
Calculate the percent voids between aggregate particles, which have been compacted by rodding, if the dry-rodded unit weight is 88.0 lb/cu ft and the bulk dry specific gravity is 2.701.
Write a paper on steel sustainability.
The rotor shafte of a helicopter drives the rotor blades that provide the lifting force and is subjected to a combination of torsion and axial loading. it is known that normal stress is 68 MPa and shear stress is -100 MPa.
