Design project assignment
A square single-cylinder scotch-yoke reciprocating compressor is required to deliver 30 CFM of air at 150 psi. It is estimated that the cylinder dimeter would be 120 mm and due to space requirements the piston rod has to be at least 1.2 m long
Teams of students are required to design the system which should include a two- or three-stage gearbox to reduce the motor speed to a value suitable to drive the crank shaft of the compressor. Use spur gears (or helical if you prefer) and perform the necessary design calculations on Matlab. Your PDF submission should include the following:
1. A neatly typed design report (with explanations and sketches) detailing the calculations for the following:
a) Load
b) Motor selection
c) Flywheel size estimation (use suitable values for speed fluctuations)
d) Piston rod design
e) Pin design
f) Cylinder design (neglect the effects of the cooling fins)
g) Bolted joints design (for the cylinder head and gearbox base)
h) Shaft design
i) Gear design
j) Bearing selection.
2. Detailed parts and assembly drawings for your design 25 marks
Verbal Assessment:
1. Progress will be checked three times during the course and only team members present during these checks would be awarded a mark out of 5 each time
2. Upon submission of the design report and drawings each time will be interviewed to answer questions about their designs. Randomly team members would be asked question in relation to calculations and drawings. The mark awarded will be assigned to the whole team.
