Aim - The aim of this coursework is to evaluate the student's ability to design mechatronics systems involving machine elements such as gears, bearings, power screw, springs etc. which are integrated in the form of an assembly.

Objective - Enable the student to correlate the theory concepts to the practical problems Design various machine elements such as gears, bearings, power screws, springs.

Question:

An Engineering consultancy firm in Oman has to design a variable speed conveyor system for transporting goods in upcoming Railway station in Sohar. In order to optimize the cost and attain maximum performance, the firm is synthesizing with several mechanisms.

One of the design developed by the firm was to operate the conveyor with DC motor coupled with a gear box to lift the variable load of (0.5 + 0.01 D) Tonswhere D is last two digit of student ID. The output shaft of the gear box is coupled with a power screw. The power screw is coupled with a Robot arm to lift the weight of goods drop it on the separate platform from height of 150cm. The platform is supported with damping mechanism to absorb the impact of load.

Draw a neat labelled layout diagram for the above mechanism showing all dimensions selected for the design.

Design and select the following components required for above mechanism:

a) Suitable Motor required to operate the mechanism;

b) Gear box for obtaining the variable speed;

c) Power screw required to displace the goods;

d) Suitable Bearings needed to facilitate the motion of goods;

e) Damping element used to reduce the shock and vibration.

Give summary report on:-(Maximum Word Limit to 500 words)

i. Assumptions made in the design phase;
ii. Material selection;
iii. Factor of safety taken;
v. Tabulate the results of all calculated values for each component and Comment on these results.
