Assignment - Management Project
Aim: The aim of this assignment is to introduce the student to the business aspects of Engineering Management, as well as professionalism and ethics.
Assignment Overview -
Part 1: Employability - Fitzroy Andrew
You will be provided with a series of workshops, the aim of these will be to help you develop your CV and Development Action Plan (DAP) skills. You will be expected to provide a copy of both within your assignment.
A short report will also be required outlining your area of interest within the Civil Engineering field.
You will also be required to attend Continuing Professional Development (CPD) sessions, providing evidence along with a short report.
Fitzroy will follow your progression up to and including the submission of this evidence.
Part 2: Management - Ian lemon
Part two of the assignment will be carried out as a team effort and you will be in groups of three students here. You have initially been working as a sole trader for a year and have decided to expand and take on several partners or associates. The objective of the assignment is to expand your business into waste management, write a business plan, seek finance and look for expansion.
You, along with two colleagues, want to set up a business in waste management. Each of you has special skills and together you have discovered a niche market that can benefit you and the environment.
When setting up your business you must decide which type of business will be most suitable for the type of work you will carry out? This must be substantiated with a short, structured report.
Within the assignment you are required to produce a business plan; this must be convincing to your bank or investors and demonstrate that your proposal can be justified. A mission statement will contain all your aspirations and entrepreneurial thoughts.
Setting up your company made you realise the importance of leadership and management. Consider two management theorists, that have been discussed in your lectures, and formulate an argument to justify which one you would choose to best suit this business proposal.
Whilst dealing with waste, environmental issues will play a large part in the way the business will legitimately function. You will be expected to attend an interview with your bank or investors convincing them that your plan will work. You will need to produce a programme of events for your lecturer the week following receipt of this brief; this must be submitted will be monitored closely by your tutors.
During the course of developing your business you find that contaminated waste has been concealed, you are offered a bribe to dispose of it. You should differentiate between Public Sector corruption and commercial interests.
Health and safety legislation will form a large part of the report. Describe how you will address risks and your methods of working. How will the Construction Design and Management (CDM) regulations affect the workings of the new business enterprise?
Question 1 - Student 1 (Project Manager)
(a) Provide a detailed overview of the factors you considered when setting up your own business as a sole trader for the previous years and how and why you developed the new business venture. You are to include your initial capital set up and assets being provided for the new venture.

(b) Provide justification for the proposed location of the business; including the environmental Impact.
(c) You have encountered several quality issues in the past within the new company set up; identifying the problems along with resolving issues has not been addressed fully.
Design a quality assurance plan in the form of a flow chart to not only address these issues but also improve them, a brief overview will be required in each section.
(d) You carry out a job in which you find out that contaminated waste has been concealed and you are offered compensation. You hold a corporate qualification. Discuss the implications for your company.
Question 2 - Student 2
(a) Provide a detailed overview of the factors you considered when setting up your own business as a sole trader for the previous years and how and why you developed the new business venture. You are to include your initial capital set up and assets required for the new venture.
New Venture
(b) Discuss in detail the legislation that needs to be considered when setting up the company.
(c) CDM regulation is very important and safety is paramount. Risk assessment and method statements supported with pictorials will need to be considered within the context of your report.
(d) In 1997 World leaders came together to ratify the Kyoto agreement, this policy had far reaching implications for governments.
Discuss how this along with local and national policies could be related to sustainable management and how opportunities for mitigating carbon emissions in your business venture would be considered
Question 3 - Student 3
(a) Provide a detailed overview of the factors you considered when setting up your own business as a sole trader for the previous years and how and why you developed the new business venture. You are to include your initial capital set up and assets required for the new venture.

(b) You have now progressed from being a sole trading business . Discuss in detail two alternative business routes you all considered. Explain which one would be more appropriate and why?
(c) Provide a detailed overview of two management theorists whose work could be modelled into this scenario. From your discussions and arguments, conclude which theorist you would select as the most appropriate.
(d) Undertake a SWOT analyses supporting your teams new business venture identifying -Strengths v Weaknesses and Opportunities v Threats.
Group Presentation - Provide a business plan, which is sufficiently detailed to convince your moneylenders or investors that this business venture is viable. Slide 1 will incorporate a dynamic mission statement.

Part 3 - Measurement (Field and class exercise)
Part three of the assignment will be carried out as a team effort. Using surveying equipment you will be required to calculate the centre line and height of one of the designated halls of residence allocated to your team. This will allow you to take of quantities to CEMM4 and document your evidence in the correct format.
(i) You will be provided with the location details of one of the circular halls of residence selected by your tutor. (Ian lemon)
From the field exercise carried out in the Surveying part of the module, you will need to calculate the centre line of your designated building. You will need to demonstrate that an alternative method to calculate the centre line can be used to test your results. The average height of the building will also need to be calculated.
(ii) Provide suitable sketches outlining the substructure incorporating suitable foundations.
(iii) Calculate in m2 the amount of block walling, 250mm thick, required to construct a similar building up to and including the roof, excluding all windows and door opening. (Note: The original construction of these buildings consisted of prefabricated concrete sections).
