You are a staff member of a mid sized not-for-profit agency in downtown Toronto serving street-involved youth 16-24 years of age. The organization just went through an Appreciative Inquiry (AI) exercise and worked through the 6 Ds (Define, Discover, Dream, Design, Deliver) which resulted in a new vision statement.
The new vision "strives to create equitable and inclusive programming for street- involved youth. With a goal of educating funders to understand the diverse needs of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) and LGBTQ2S+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Two Spirited, Plus) street-involved youth as a way to build community capacity among stakeholders, funders and those who use the programs."
The organization has received some government funding but needs more core funding to supplement the basic services and programs being provided. In the past, the organization relied on an annual in-person gala to raise additional funds. However, the overhead costs where high and lessons learned from COVID showed that they needed to look at more flexible online fundraising avenues. As well, the AI exercise revealed that the gala no longer aligns with their new vision statement, as it was elitist, top-down and often excluded the very community members they were serving.
The Executive Director (ED) of the organization wants to make sure that any new fundraising efforts align with the new vision of the organization. The ED has tasked you and other staff members to recommend a potential fundraising event. The top 3 will be proposed to the board members at the next meeting. Be sure that the fundraiser aligns with the new vision, is strategic and sustainable. The Fundraising Proposal needs to include the following:
1. A description of the new proposed fundraising event. How much do you realistically think your proposed fundraising idea will make? What are the advantages? What are the limitations of such an event?
2. Your recommendations. What elements should be included in the event you propose to best align it with the organizations' vision statement.
3. How is your fundraiser informed by AOP, social justice and community centric Fundraising? (connect to your learning in the course)
