Assignment - Journal: Brainstorm Potential Topics
This activity introduces you to various brainstorming activities to help you transform the topics that interest you into story ideas. Later, your peers and instructor will help you choose among these ideas for the piece that you will develop and submit at the end of the term. Using the brainstorming technique that works best for you, you will prepare to write a journal proposing five story ideas for your instructor to review and respond to.
Review each of these resources: Purdue: Brainstorm for the Essay and Concept Mapping (6:39).
The overview for this module discusses different methods of brainstorming as the first step in the writing process. For this assignment, choose one brainstorming method that works best for you to generate ideas for potential story topics for your final nonfiction work. From the materials created in your brainstorming activity, identify the top five ideas that you would be interested in developing further, being sure that the range of your topics could be adapted to/appropriate for all three subgenres.
Using these topics, create a journal assignment describing the nonfiction stories you would like to write this term. Each topic you list should be followed by a brief synopsis (fewer than 100 words) of how you are planning to approach the piece and the writing genre that you will use. Your five topic selections should span all three featured subgenres (memoir or personal essay, profile, or feature story).
