SOC 111: Introduction to Sociology:
Norm Violation Assignment
For this assignment. you are required to violate a social norm/social experiment. Once you have completed the violation please write a reflection paper discussing the experience including your personal reflections/response as well as the response and reactions of individuals (age restricted to 18 +) who were in the environment in which the violation took place. Below are the requirements that must be followed to successfully complete the violation and the written part of the norm violation.
Please use your best writing skills! Proof-read and spell check your paper, before you submit the assignment. Your paper must be written in APA format, be at least 5-pages in length and include a title page. Please note: that references are only needed if you use work other than your own. This section will be worth 10 points. However, if any portion of the format is missing your paper will be deducted the full 10 points.
Step One: Remember that social norms are socially based rules that define how we should act in specific situations. For this assignment, you are required to intentionally violate a social norm. The primary goal of the assignment is for students to conduct social experiment to understand the concept of social norms, social sanctions, and stigma. To complete this assignment, it is important that you follow each step below in violating a social norm:
1. Be sure you understand and define social norms.
2. Choose a social norm to violate.
3. Choose a public location/environment to violate the norm. Secondly, please make sure that the norm violation is considered a violation in the chosen environment.
4. Violate the social norm.
5. Please be creative, original and imaginative when performing the violation.
6. Carefully observe yourself and others as the norm violation occurs.
Step Two: Write and Complete the Assignment Paper - Required Information:
1. Briefly define the Sociological definition of social norms.
2. Describe the specific social norm that you violated and why you chose this norm, including how it identifies as a social norm violation.
3. Describe the behavior you engaged in to violate this norm.
4. Describe the setting/environment you chose (physical and social) and why.
5. Describe in detail exactly, how you felt before, during and after the social experience. How uncomfortable were you?
6. Describe in detail, how did others react to your behavior? Specifically describe their actions (verbal and nonverbal).
7. What social sanctions resulted from your norm violation? Who created and/or enforced them? How?
8. How do race, class, and/or gender affect your norm violation (others perception of it, your ability to do it, different sanctions that might be brought against different groups or person engaging in the same act)?
9. In your conclusion section of the paper describe:
a. What did you learn about societal norms and social control (informal and formal)?
b. What did you learn about yourself as a social being?
c. What other observations can you make about the assignment?
