INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY

1. The sociological perspective provides a specific view of the world and the individual's role in that world. Describe the sociological perspective and discuss its importance in understanding oneself and the broader social world. Include C. W. Mills' concept of the sociological imagination in your response.

2. Van Gelder suggests in Sustainable Happiness that the American Dream, as well as our overall happiness, seems to be getting much more difficult to achieve and that it is too important to be left to advertisers marketing more "stuff." Discuss the areas the various authors identify as current challenges to happiness and well-being. Also, consider what makes you happy. Finally, how might we boost the level of happiness within our culture?
