Problem

Roman legions carried banners with the letters SPQR ("For the People and Senate of Rome") upon them. This was to serve as a permanent reminder of the shared values and sacrifice contained in Roman life. During the age of the Roman Republic, citizen-soldiers fought to preserve and expand the reach of Rome. During the age of the Roman Empire, greater conquest of territory and economic expansion both enriched and challenged the future of Rome. In many ways, the history of many modern nation-states (including the United States) mirrors the challenges and achievements of Ancient Rome. There is no civilization equivalent to the achievement of Rome and the influence it has had on the future history of Western society. We continue to borrow much of our political, economic, social, and military heritage from Rome to the present (similar to Greece, look at a number of public buildings in your town and note the Roman influence on architecture). Chapter Seven will ask you to consider what the Romans valued in society, the challenges the civilization faced, and the transformation of Rome from a Republic to an Empire. As you read the chapter, consider that the founders of the United States sought to produce a Republic as durable as Ancient Rome. Get the instant assignment help.

Describe the social and political ideals of the Roman Republic. In what ways were these ideas challenged by both the Punic Wars (264-146 B.C.E.) and rise of military leaders such as Julius Caesar? Despite the rise of the Roman Empire, how did some of the ideas of the Republic survive after the assassination of Julius Caesar? In your essay you will wish to discuss the concept of pater familias, the roles of patricians and plebeians, and the growth of latifundia.
