The British cyclist Joss Lowden recently broke the world record for one of the most revered events in cycling - "The Hour". Simply put, the event requires the cyclist to cover the greatest distance possible in 60 minutes exactly (in other words, ride as fast as possible for a full hour). The Hour is considered one of the most intense and painful events in the sport - not only for its intensity and duration, but also for the fact that it must be done solo.

Lowden covered a distance of 48.405km at the Grenchen velodrome in Switzerland - for those of us not metrically inclined, mere decimals below 30 mph.

Fully describe the regulation of energy metabolism which enables such an effort. Ensure that you address any metabolic processes involved and specify particular hormones, enzymes, metabolites, etc. responsible for the activation, acceleration, or inhibition of these processes.
