Fluid/Electrolyte Imbalances:
1. Discuss the four major ways edema can develop within the body. Provide a specific example of a disease previously discussed in the course related to each of the four causes of edema. Explain how the etiology/pathogenesis of the example disease contributed to the edema.
2. Explain how kidney failure influences body pH, sodium levels, potassium levels, and fluid balance.
3. Describe the three common etiologies for acute renal failure. Be sure to include examples of disorders previously discussed in the course that could contribute to each etiology and discuss how each example disorder can influence renal failure.
Acid/Base Imbalances:
4. Compare and contrast volatile and nonvolatile body acids. Be sure to provide specific examples of each and explain how they are formed within the body. Address the normal functions of the acids and their role in maintaining body pH.
5. What are common signs/symptoms (manifestations) that would cause health care professionals to suspect a patient is experiencing acidosis? What are common signs/symptoms (manifestations) that would cause healthcare professionals to suspect a patient is experiencing alkalosis? Pick two signs/symptoms and explain why they are occurring.
6. Provide a detailed example of how a patient could experience a mixed acid-base disorder.
Gastrointestinal Disorders and Nutrition:
7. Compare and contrast Chron's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, including the etiology, pathogenesis, and signs/symptoms of each disorder. Be sure to discuss key characteristics that enable healthcare professionals to tell the difference between the two diseases.
8. What are gallstones and how do they develop? Describe a person who would be at high risk for developing gallstones. What are common treatments for gallstones? Give an example of how they can contribute to the etiology of another GI disorder.
9. Compare and contrast the three types of gastritis. Discuss significant differences in etiology, pathogenesis, and signs/symptoms (manifestations). Are there any common signs/symptoms seen in all three forms of gastritis?
