Paper Assignment based on Pueblo Revolt of 1696

I. Theme: Under the leadership of Diego de Vargas, the Spanish returned to New Mexico in the early 1690s. Upon their return, the Spanish re-established their authority and the Catholic religion in New Mexico. However, many of the Pueblo people would remain resentful of the Spanish and in 1696, another revolt would be in the making.

II. Content: Choose 11 letters (i.e. documents) plus the introductory chapter from
‘The Pueblo Revolt of 1696 and the Franciscan Missions in New Mexico' by J. Manuel Espinosa and then answer the following questions:

1. In what ways did the Spanish exert control over the Pueblo peoples before the Pueblo Revolt of 1696? Consider economics, religion, political power (use the introductory chapter here (pp'3-58)

2. Using three letters (i.e. documents) and in a minimum of 500 words, what warnings did the Franciscan friars-beginning in December 1695-convey to Governor Vargas about an impending revolt and what did they want from the governor?

3. In a minimum of 250 words, what was the governor's response to these warnings and concerns of the Franciscan friars before the 1696 revolt. (Use one document)

3. Using four letters (i.e. documents) and in a minimum of 500 words, discuss the Franciscans' experience during the Pueblo Revolt of 1696!

4. Using three letters (i.e. documents) and in a minimum of 500 words--What did the Pueblo people gain or lose by the Pueblo Revolt of 1696?

5. List the documents you used on the tenth page of the paper.
