Assignment:
1. Based on "A Visit to the Wife of Suleiman the Magnificent," what do you find surprising about this interaction? What do you think this might tell us about the Islamic court of Suleiman, and does it challenge any of your assumptions? How so?
2. Based on "The Turkish Letters," what/who are the janissaries? What is their role, function, purpose? Why do you think they were limited to Christian boys? Why do you think Christian parents in Muslim territory would want their sons to become janissaries (make an educated guess)? Can you predict any potential problems with this type of military?
3. Based on "The Tribute of Children," how would you define and describe the janissaries? Does this differ from the account you read in "The Turkish Letters" by de Busbecq from the 1500s? Do you think the background of Tappan has influenced her account of these Islamic soldiers? How so? Do you think she offers any interesting or new perspectives on them?
4. Based on "Letter to Shah Ismail of Persia from Sultan Selim I," what exactly is happening in this letter? How would you describe the tone? What authority is Selim using and/or claiming? What do you think his main issue is? Why? What sorts of issues do you predict come of this?
5. Based on "An Account of India and the Great Moghul" what is Bernier trying to convey? How do the rajahs and rajipous compare to the janissaries? Do you think the Mughals differ greatly from the Ottomans or Safavids based on this?
