1.) Using Lenin's description of an imperialistic event, describe the difference between imperialism and expansionism. Examine the pattern of American expansion first developed in our early national history and explain how the Texas experience is likely the best illustration of that pattern. How did Americans justify their expansionistic impulse in the middle nineteenth century? Describe how the election of 1844 served as a national referendum on expansionism and analyze the effects of the event that the election led to.

2.) Describe the origins of slavery in British North America. What were some of the distinctive features of the institution that set it apart from other slavery societies? What were the economic and social effects of slavery? What principles were generally agreed upon by slave owners that must be observed to best preserve the institution? How did slaves react to their enslavement?

3.) Analyze the factors that contributed to a racist component within British culture. Using Jefferson as a guide, describe the justifications Americans used to "explain" the superiority of white America. Assess the meaning to racism within the American cultural apparatus.

4.) Trace the development of the slavery issue in politics during the early nineteenth century. Evaluate the political status of the south within the union up to the outbreak of the civil war. Describe how the Mexican War affected the slavery question and how the issue was settled in 1850. Describe the long-term effect of the compromise.

5.) Trace the evolution of anti-slavery sentiment in American life. How did each era differ in its opposition; provide the basis of each period's opposition; name specific examples of either groups and/or people who articulated the era's anti-slavery attitudes, and compare and contrast the last two periods particularly. Why was abolitionism so unpopular?

6.) Looking at both long and short-term contributions to the coming of the civil war, describe the events of the 1850s as they led this country toward disunion. Why did the south decide it must secede? What led to the attack on Fort Sumter?

7.) Describe and analyze the three approaches toward Reconstruction. Describe the both positive and negative legacies of Congressional Reconstruction?
