Analyzing, Interpreting, and Assessing Visual Art Artists use the elements and principles of design to express a variety of effects in their art, including important aspects of their place, time, or culture. Now that you are familiar with the components of design, we can look more closely at how these qualities come together in an artwork to create meaning in a whole composition. Complete both parts of this worksheet and submit together in this document. Part 1 focuses on identifying design elements in artworks from non-European cultures. Part 2 gives options for discussing the design elements and qualities of a selected artwork.
Part 1: Museum Website Scavenger Hunt - Cultures Choose an example of a work of art from each of the cultural groups below:

Part 2: Analyzing, Interpreting, and Assessing Visual Art Select one of the works of art from your scavenger hunt in Part 1, or one from an artist that is featured in the Artists section of Google Arts & Culture. summary in which you analyze and interpret a work of visual art based on the elements and principles of visual art design. Select one of the following options for your analysis and interpretation:
Option A - Speech Script Imagine you have been asked by a curious audience (such as a group of tourists, a class of children, or a date you want to impress) to speak to them about this work of art. a script of a speech that you could give to your audience about the work of art.
Option B - Art Magazine Critique Imagine a local arts organization publishes a magazine that includes community reviews of works of art. You have been asked to contribute a critique of the artwork you selected. a critique of the artwork you selected. Options A and B should address the following. bullet.
• Describe the artwork in terms of the six elements of visual design: line, light and color, texture, pattern, space, and time and motion. Focus on the elements that are most relevant to your selected work of art.
• Analyze the work in terms of the five principles of visual design: unity and variety, balance, emphasis and focal point, scale and proportion, and rhythm and repetition. Focus on the principles that are most relevant to your selected work of art.
• Evaluate the quality of the artwork based on the elements and principles of visual design. Analyze and interpret what the artist intended to communicate through this artwork, including the significance of the title, if any.
• Assess the cultural and historical value of this artwork. Does it qualify as great art in your opinion? Justify your answer.
