Assignment:
Albeit in very different ways, both the National Science Foundation and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. emphasize the value and opportunity of social science research to materially benefit society. Almeida (2019) describes several levels of social movements (i.e., everyday forms of resistance, local grassroots movements, etc.) and some of the primary methods used to investigate social groups.
1) Review the Learning Resources this week.
2) Pick one level of social movement that you could use to study the Civil Rights Movement. Note, multiple options would work!
3) Discuss the following questions:
Given the level you chose, which method do you think would be most effective: interviews, observations, surveys, archives/secondary data, or protest event analysis?
If someone was going to conduct a study using the method you chose, what advice would you give this researcher to make sure they satisfied the National Science Foundation's "Broader Impacts" criterion?
Specifically, even the best research will have no broader impact if nobody knows about it. How would you suggest the researcher disseminate their results?
