Laboratory: Permeability

Write a couple of sections of a Petroleum Engineering

Prepare the Permeability laboratory report.

b. Write background part on the above two articles and Executive Summary;

c. Experimental Procedure;

d. Nomenclature;

e. All equations.

The lab manual, report template, and one previous lab report are attached so that you know what it is supposed to look like.

Please cite the sources that you use and include the references. All the details are in the lab manual and just follow the report template. This one will be about permeability.

Permeability of a sand/glass bead packing

1. Measure the flow rate.

2. Measure the pressure drop.

3. Calculate the permeability of a core.

Pre-Experiment Procedures

1. Check if all team members are present otherwise report to TA or instructor.

2. Check if you and your team members are wearing the proper attire and safety protection.

3. Check if all materials are present and working. For each experimental station:
  a. HPLC Pump;
  b. Stop watch;
  c. Measuring cylinder;
  d. Steel tube with a core sample sealed inside.

4. Note down the location of all safety equipment e.g. Fire extinguishers, Eye wash, Safety shower, Fire alarms, and First aid kit.

  Procedure

1. Note down model no. of all equipment/instruments.

2. Note down the uncertainty of the pressure gauge.

3. Note down you tube number because each tube has its own parameters.

4. Start the pump by setting its flow rates at lowest of 4 different flow numbers (depends on which tube you are using, the instructor will give you the corresponding flow rates).

5. Pump the water the pass through the tube. Check for any leaks and report to the TA or instructor.

6. Once the pressure has stabilized in a few minutes, place the measuring cylinder at the outlet of the packed column and start the stop watch.

7. Stop the stopwatch at a predefined volume. Do not forget to lift the plastic tube from the water because it takes some space and causes error.

8. When you finished one flow rate and ready to go to next flow rate, you should stop the pump, change the flow rate, and then start the pump again.

9. Record the time to fill the volume, and the corresponding Max and Min pressure on the gauge. Measuring 5 times for each flow rate. Your team should have totally 20 readings.

10. Make sure the TA signs the observation sheet attesting that you have returned all the equipment and materials as is.

Post Experiment Suggestions

1. Literature search:
   a. Minimum 2 book references and 6 journal references;

  b. Describe methods of measurement of permeability of sandstone using liquid and gas. Are they the same? How do the two correlate? Support it with equations and references;
   c. How are those measurements different from the one done in the lab? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
   d. Provide data of permeability of sand packs, sandstone, carbonates and shale.

2. Draw schematic of the experiment and insert photograph of the experiment.

3. Perform calculations with error analysis. What are your assumptions and explain the reasons for those assumptions?

4. Show step by step for one data point all calculations with appropriate units.

5. Results and Discussion:
  a. Make a summary table for all your results and uncertainties;
  b. Support your results with figures/graphs and tables;
  c. Defend the credibility of your data and measurements with error analysis;
  d. Support your data with the references used in the background.
  e. Discuss our lab method, the limitation, the accuracy, and the possible improvement for our home-made equipment.

6. Follow the template.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1) It should consist of two paragraphs.

2) Should not be numbered. Should not exceed 1 page.

3) First section:The intellectual merit of the activity.

a. The problem statement and what are the specific objectives/aims of the experiment.

b. One or two sentences explaining what was done.

c. One or two sentences indicating the main findings. (Absolutely essential). Include the result values here. How does your data compare with literature?

4) Second section: Broad impacts.

a. What is the most important consequence of the work? E.g. how is this measurement important in Petroleum Engineering?

b. Where this measured quantity is used in practice? May have to use background part of the report.

c. Write this part as if you are the first person to do this experiment in the entire world and how will it impact the science, technology and where all it will be used and how useful it will be.

I found an old permeability lab report that I wish I had found earlier, it would have helped the expert in drafting my report greatly. It is an excellent report, and it would have been a valuable resource to use as a guide. I'll use my current report now, and see how the impression is first and determine if I need to re-frame. 21453917_1docx.docx Re-framing would be an additional cost, correct? Hello, I need help with my new homework assignment please. 21453976_1IMG135127286.jpg

I am team 1 by the way. Thank you, is there any excel files? Thank you very much. Should I include the red portions in my report? Yes, you have to include as these are important part as per your requirement. also you have to fill up.. 1) MODEL NO. OF ALL EQUIPMENT/INSTRUMENTS: 2) YOU TUBE NUMBER BECAUSE EACH TUBE HAS ITS OWN PARAMETERS: BUT IT WILL BE BETTER IF YOU CHANGE COLOUR TO BLACK I can't find the model numbers of the equipment/instruments used and I can't find the you tube number in my pictures that I took of the experiment.

I have checked that your lab setup is not matched with other institute setup or net available data. Then how could I get data. kindly provide us the data... I will have the lab data tomorrow and can send it then. Is that okay? But what about the tables from the background that aren't part of the experimental data? For example Table: Comparing permeability of two samples with the Xenon gas and gas permeater methods: Table: Permeability of various reservoirs Kindly check PAGE 12 AND PAGE 19. IT IS AVAILABLE THERE. AS IT IS RELATED TO THAT PART, SO I HAVE MENTIONED THERE. Here is the laboratory data. The minimum and maximum pressures on the data sheet are in PSI. 21453921_1IMG 20170307 151028.jpg 21453921_2IMG 20170307 141713.jpg 21453979_3IMG 20170307 141612.jpg Here is the diagram of the apparatus and information regarding the experiment. 21453965_1IMG 20170307 141534.jpg 21453965_2IMG 20170307 141713.jpg 21453965_3IMG 20170307 141612.jpg

Maybe just make it similar to this but we don't have the data yet so ignore the data part, just assume it has good permeability and compare it with literature and with a table. 21453941_1RESULTS AND DISCUSSION lab3 part of it 1docx.pdf How is the progress on the report? Is it finished? For example, I have attached an old report and as you can see there are many citations within the text. Such as [1], [4], [6] for example. The number indicates which reference is used to write the text. Can you please provide citations within the report such as in this example I have attached. Thank you. 21453972_1Viscosity lab.pdf Thank you, and where do the numbers come from that is in the experimental data? The times and pressures? Data taken from excel file under your zip file. Can the expert delete all parts that are directly copied from the old report such as the tables with the same information. Maybe change the information in the tables as to not be copied? The report has to be original, and copying old reports directly is not allowed in the class. Then provide me readings as per your lab manual requirement.

So, this lab report is for "Laboratory 3 - Permeability" in the lab manual. Do you want "permeability of sand or glass" or both sand and glass along with other pre procedure and all? Please hold on. I need to find out what is specifically required. I will update. The lab manual says this: How are those measurements different from the one done in the lab? I do not know, just ignore that part. Focus on this: a. Search 2 Journal articles; b. Write background part on the above 2 articles and Executive Summary; c. Experimental Procedure; d. Nomenclature; e. All equations. You can wait for now. I am going to get an old permeability lab report from a previous student, and I'll send it so that the expert knows what to do and has a good guide to follow. Because I am unsure of these things. Thank you. Here is the old permeability lab report draft from a previous semester from a student who took the class previously. I put the draft into a zip file. 21453980_1Lab 3 Report Permeability.rar

I have to write a couple of sections of a Petroleum Engineering Permeability laboratory report. I am member 4 - So I have to do a. Search 2 Journal articles; b. Write background part on the above 2 articles and Executive Summary; c. Experimental Procedure; d. Nomenclature; e. All equations. I'll include the lab manual, report template, and one previous lab report so that you know what it is supposed to look like. The sections that I have to do is in the one previous old lab report, so you will know what has to be done an what it will look like. But remember, the previous old lab report I'm sending is the previous lab of porosity, this one is permeability. So the equations, nomenclature, and background will all be different from the old lab report. Please cite the sources that you use and include the references. All the details are in the lab manual and just follow the report template. So keep in mind, the end result should look like the same sections in the old viscosity lab, but this one will be about permeability instead.
